"A Radiographer is a person who is professionally trained and qualified to apply various forms of radiant energies and wave-forms on human beings in order to promote health, treat diseases and produce diagnostic images. They can be Diagnostic or Therapy Radiographers. The Board (RRBN) ensures that only Qualified and Registered Radiographers discharge these duties.”
They produce images of the internal organs of the body so that injury or disease can be identified. They use the following imaging modalities to practice: Conventional X-Ray, Fluoroscopy, Computed Tomography, Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Ultrasound Imaging and Angiography.
Radiography is currently a 5-year undergraduate course of study leading to B.Sc Radiography in the following Universities: University of Calabar, University of Nigeria Nsukka, University of Lagos, University of Maiduguri and Bayero University Kano. The Board ensures that strict adherence to the Standard Curriculum of study is followed. The Board (RRBN) has also currently developed a white paper (at the sub-regional level) on a six (6) year Doctor of Radiography Programme anchored by the West African Health Organization (WAHO).
They use ionizing radiation mainly to treat patients who have cancer. They do this by using appropriate equipment to deliver pre-determined doses of radiation on tumour cells.
